How to measure your blood pressure correctly at home
Five simple habits that make your home readings as reliable as the clinic's.

Home readings help your doctor see what your blood pressure is really like day to day, away from the stress of a clinic visit.
Sit quietly for five minutes first, with your back supported and feet flat on the floor. Avoid coffee, smoking and exercise for 30 minutes before measuring.
Rest your arm on a table so the cuff is level with your heart. Wrap the cuff on bare skin, about two fingers above the elbow crease.
Take two readings one minute apart, morning and evening, for seven days before a doctor's visit. Write them down or use the monitor's memory.
Do not talk during the measurement. A reading above 180/120 should be repeated after five minutes; if it stays that high, seek emergency care.
